Delhi cop and neighbour injured in shooting; gang war suspected | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: A policeman and his neighbour were shot at by unidentified bikers in Alipur on Sunday evening. Over seven rounds were fired at them but the two miraculously survived despite bullet injuries.
Preliminary investigation has pointed towards the possibility of the shooting incident being the result of an ongoing gang war between the Gogi and Tillu gangs, officers said.
The police officer, Sube Singh, is posted as an assistant sub-inspector at Seelampur police station in northeast Delhi while his neighbour, Mahender, works as a sanitary inspector.
Police suspect that Mahender was the target as the Tillu gang had shot dead his brother in 2017. Tillu allegedly got the shooting carried out to influence the trial of that case, they added.
The two injured persons are admitted in the hospital for treatment. They were sitting outside their home when the masked bikers arrived and opened fire.
Mahender was shot in his waist while Singh sustained two shots in his legs. The neighbours gathered hearing gunshot and screams and rushed the duo to a hospital in Shalimar Bagh.
Police were informed and an FIR under sections of attempted murder was registered. The kingpins of both the gangs, Jitender Gogi and Sunil Tajpuria alias Tillu, are currently lodged in jail and allegedly run the show through their henchmen.
Their rivalry started during an election at Shraddhanand College years ago as they apparently supported opposite candidates. However, the rivalry turned bloody after the elections as Gogi murdered one of Tillu’s associates, Deepak, for allegedly harassing his cousin. Tillu then killed Gogi’s friend, Arun Commando, in 2015 triggering an all-out gang war.
Gogi went on to kill another associate of Tillu, Ravi Bhardwaj, and also singer Harshita Dahiya, a witness of a murder in which his aide, Dinesh Karala, was an accused. More than 25 murders have been reported in this gang war till now.
The Sunday’s incident is being linked to the murder of Commando, sources said. A man named Niranjan who was a teacher at a government school was doing “Pairvi” in this case in court. Tillu allegedly shot dead Niranjan in 2017 in Murthal. Niranjan was the brother of Mahender.
Tillu apparently suspected that Niranjan’s brother was financially helping the Gogi gang and had planned to eliminate him. Sources tracking these gangs said that a retaliation by Gogi gang was imminent.
