Dhanbad: A 35-year-old man died of a cardiac arrest on Monday morning hours after his wife committed suicide late on Sunday in Chandamri colliery area under Dhansar police station limits.
Officer-in-charge of Dhansar police station, Jairam Prasad, said, “The post mortem reports of the two revealed that the wife died by hanging herself while the husband died of a cardiac arrest.”
Although Reena Devi (32) did not leave behind any suicide note, the family of four was allegedly struggling to make ends meet amid the pandemic which may have prompted her in taking the extreme step. The couple has a seven-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son.
While Reena sold cosmetic products in a roadside cart and worked as a domestic help to sustain her family, the couple’s relatives said her husband Amarjeet Soni — a native of Begusarai district in Bihar — was unemployed since 2018.
The couple’s neighbours informed the police the duo had an argument on Sunday evening. “Prima facie it appears that the woman locked herself up in a room following the argument and hanged herself,” a police official said.
Later, Amarjeet broke open the door and was deeply shocked upon seeing her hanging which led to the cardiac arrest a few minutes later. He became unconscious, prompting the neighbours to alert the cops. A team of Dhanbad police reached his house and sent Reena’s body to PMCH for a post mortem while Amarjeet was taken to a private nursing home where he later died.
